Amelia & Isobelle Smith win gold medals in Karate!
Year 7 student Amelia Smith proudly represented New Zealand at the recent Oceania Karate Championship Cup held in Auckland. Competing against top athletes from seven Oceania countries over two gruelling days of competition, Amelia took out three Gold medals for Team Kata, Team Kumite, and Individual Kata, and a Silver medal for Individual Kumite - scoring the highest medal count of the competition. Amelia was also recognised by Karate New Zealand as the stand out athlete in the Under 14 year category receiving the “strength and courage award” alongside a select few senior athletes. Amelia is now focused on fund raising to get to Croatia for the Youth Training Camp and Youth Cup.
Year 9 student Isobelle Smith also proudly represented New Zealand at the recent Oceania Karate Championship Cup. Whilst Isobelles participation was limited by a significant injury, Isobelle joined her team mates to win Gold for Team Kata, helping to ensure New Zealand’s second place position on the medal table (Australia won by 1 Gold). Alongside her recent sporting success, Isobelle has also secured a full year scholarship in the AUT Millenium Institutes Athlete Development Programme.
